Webpage Workshop Overview

Setup Task. Create a Local Copy of the Workshop File Set on your PC

Download: Workshop_File_Set.zip to your PC and unzip it. You will have three folders:
  1. docs in prep
  2. instructions
  3. public_html local

During the workshop you will practice creating and updating PDF files and uploading then to the website by completing the tasks outlined below. Detailed instructions are given in the instructions folder of the Workshop File Set.

The prep folder contains Word format document masters from which PDF files will be generated.

The public_html local folder contains a much reduced copy of some of the files on the webserver. The local copy is used to test that files are correctly named and in place before uploading them to the webserver.

Adding a new or updated PDF to the website is a three-step process:

  1. Prepare the PDF on the local PC
  2. Move the PDF to the Local copy of the site. Edit the HTML index if required.
  3. Upload the PDF and HTML index if required to the Webserver

Note: During the workshop, you will install FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software on your PC and you will be given the necessary webserver access credentials required to upload and download files to and from the webserver.

Task 1. Add a new issue to the BUZZ Index. Fix some broken links

August is the most recent issue. The September issue has been prepared. The June and June links are broken.

  1. Move the September PDF to the demo_buzz folder of the local website.
  2. Update the BUZZ Issues HTML index.
  3. Correct the broken links to the June and July issues.
  4. Move the September PDF and the HTML index to the demo_buzz folder on the webserver
  5. Correct the name of the July issue in the demo_buzz folder on the webserver

Task 2. Add a newsletter to the Library News Index

July is the most recent issue. The August issue Word format file has been prepared.

  1. Generate the August Library News PDF file.
  2. Move the August PDF to the library folder of the local website.
  3. Update the Library News HTML index.
  4. Upload the August Library News PDF and ghe HTML index to the webserver.

Task 3. Add and update some U3A Info Pages

Note: there is no HTML index for U3A Info pages. They are accessed via links in the Banner Menu that appears at the top of every page. Most are PDF format documents. The FAQs file is an HTML format exception.

The Committee Members Word format document has been prepared. The PDF is not yet in place. The About Us PDF needs updating. The update has been prepared in Word format. The FAQs file is to be converted to a PDF.

  1. Generate the Committee Members PDF from the Word.DOCX master.
  2. Move committee.pdf to the u3a_info folder of the local website.
  3. Upload committee.pdf to the u3a_info folder of the webserver.
  4. Generate the: about_us.pdf from the Word.DOCX master. Move it to the u3a_info folder of the local website. Upload it to the webserver.
  5. Copy and paste the text of the faqs.html file into a new Word document. Save it as faqs.docx. Edit it as required. Generate faq.pdf from the Word.DOCX master. Move it to the u3a_info folder of the local website. Upload it to the webserver.
